Studies Show That Pedestrian-Auto-Accident Rates Climb in the Winter
Winter weather can be treacherous when you’re behind the wheel of a car in New Jersey, but it’s also dangerous for pedestrians. A national study found only one state (Iowa) where there were not more fatal pedestrian accidents in the winter than during the rest of the year. New Jersey came in 24th, with nearly 8 fatal pedestrian accidents for every billion miles driven during winter months.
Why Are Pedestrians at Greater Risk of Injury in the Winter Months?
A number of factors contribute to the increased rate of accident and injury involving pedestrians in the winter:
- Roadway conditions make it more difficult for motorists to handle or control their vehicles, often causing crosswalk collisions.
- Motorists may not take winter weather conditions into consideration.
- Visibility can be limited, either because of snow or ice on a windshield, snow flurries in the air, or the absence of daylight in the shorter winter days.
- Distracted driving can go up, as more motorists adjust the heat or defrost, taking their eyes off the road.
How Can You Minimize the Risk of a Pedestrian Accident in the Winter?
The most effective way to reduce the risk of being hit by a car is to maximize your visibility. Wear bright and/or reflective clothing, if possible. Avoid white, as it can blend too easily with inclement winter weather. Don’t wear headphones as a pedestrian, as you’ll not be able to hear an approaching vehicle or the honk of a horn. Minimize distractions while out walking—try to stay off your phone, and don’t send text messages or check emails. Always look both ways before leaving the curb.
